Brothers Empowered to Teach Initiative’s (BE2T) mission is to close the achievement gap for at-risk students by inspiring and incentivizing men of color to choose education as a career starting in New Orleans.
BE2T recruits men of color to consider education as a career and enter the classroom with the tools each man needs to be impactful and prepared for the rigors of teaching.
-The BE2T Fellowship- The Fellowship program is geared toward full-time enrolled college students. Participants are eligible beginning Sophomore year to be apart of our three year fellowship program.
-The Change Track- The Change Track is specifically for men of color who may have already had a career in another profession, are older students returning to school, or are looking to change from their current career to education.
For the fellowship program, BE2T innovates on teacher recruitment by working with students during their second year in college and exposes them to potential education careers in discreet intervals through three components:
1. Paid work study to tutor after-school children
2. Personal and professional development through our “Cipher” workshop series
3. One-on-one pairing with a veteran male educator for support in and out of the classroom
Each student will be offered a work-study stipend in exchange for participation in BE2T’s fellowship. We will strongly encourage participants to refrain from seeking part-time or full-time jobs unless it’s relative to their career interest or an internship opportunity, and solely focus on their academic development and career trajectory. Approaching graduation we will prepare fellows to be ready for an opportunity in the classroom.
Change Track participants participate in our workshop series and upon entering the classroom, will be supported with a one-on-one pairing with a male educator and will also have the opportunity to mentor school age students.
Across the country, disadvantaged public school districts have been trying innovative ways to solve the challenge of recruiting prepared teachers—particularly men of color. In recent years, districts have relied on teacher recruitment programs that tend to aim at recent college grads. Accepted teaching fellows go right from college to the challenging environment of a classroom with limited pre-classroom preparation. BE2T aims to start recruiting candidates for the classroom much earlier—while they in college and have not yet committed to a career path. By exposing them earlier we can create a greater sense of attachment. By offering more rigorous and hands on training we can ensure they are comfortably prepared for the classroom.
